My Post-Workout Chocolate Protein Cake

I was on the train the other day - it was 9am and I was heading to Southampton. Across from me was a woman reading a newspaper.

Half an hour into the journey, I got hungry. I hadn't had breakfast so... I opened my bag, pulled out a tupperware, opened it, and proceeded to devour a gigantic slice of protein cake. The cake was made with blueberries, yogurt, oats, protein powder, egg whites, and almonds. It was moist, layered, tall, and to me, it constituted a pretty well-rounded breakfast. But to this woman? Oh, no. To this woman I was conducting an act of unspeakable gluttony - I was a heart attack waiting to happen (either that or I was Bridget-Jonesing my way to a new voluptuous me.)

Her eyes were full of outrage while I ate it, รก la how-could-you-be-eating-ALL-that-CAKE-at-NINE-thirty-AM-! But there I was, smiling ear to ear - enjoying the hell out of my creation :-D

I'm telling you this because the exact same thing happened today, only this time it was at the gym. And this time, one could say the outrage was more directed (because the gym tends to make people more aware of their and others' food choices).

I grabbed a seat across from a woman who looked like she just finished workout out (all the tables are shared because, well, there aren't that many). I opened my bag, took out my tupperware, 'exposed' a big slices of cake and BOOM: munched it!

She then gave me a look of "are you sure that's the best thing to be eating post-workout?" The kind of look that you and I probably save for the people that down all makes of junkfood after the gym because they've 'earned it'. But whatever, I just ate my cake with immense gusto and left ;-)

Recipe:

1 can of aduki (or black) unsalted beans (cooked)
1/2 cup of liquid egg whites
1/2 cup of chocolate whey protein powder (I used this)
1 pot (300g) of low-fat cottage cheese
1/2 cup of cocoa powder
3/8 cup of date syrup
3 tbsp of coconut flour
1 tsp of baking powder

Directions

Blend everything together and bake in a cake pan at 170 C (370 F) for about 45-40 minutes or until, when stabbed with a knife, your knife comes out clean. Make sure you don't overbake the cake is the only thing I'd say. You want it JUST cooked, ideally still a bit moist in the center so it's nice and moist inside :-) When it's done, let it cook, take it out of the pan and sprinkle some cocoa on top with a sift!

Macros

If you slice the cake into eight BIG slices, each slice:

155.2kcals
19g carbs (out of which 5g is fiber!)
12.5g protein
2.5g fat!

  5. Looks absolutely amazing!! Such a shame I don't think I could get hold of the majority of those ingredients :(
I can imagine eating what looks like to be a chocolate cake at the gym would be the most hilarious thing ever though - the looks on peoples' faces must have been priceless!!

  8. Is there any possible substitutions for the date syrup, such as honey? I'm unfamiliar with it's consistency.

    1. Hmmm I'd use a low fat cream cheese or ricotta or mascarpone before? just because it'll give more body...

  10. Alright, ladies in the local gym.... Prepare to stare at my breakfast tomorrow morning and wonder/drool/whatever....... I'll be digging into these. Thanks much for the recipe. In the past I have also made frosting from low fat cottage cheese and protein powder which should be perfect on this.

  11. Hi Anna,
I'm guessing this is not ''The cake was made with blueberries, yogurt, oats, protein powder, egg whites, and almonds'' as in the beginning of the article, do you have the recipe for that one at all?
Awesome site BTW and love your style on Ben Coomber Radio

    1. Hi Paul! That was my train cake. I think it's under 'Train Cake' somewhere in the blog?

  12. I JUST made these (except I put them in mini muffin cups) and baked for 30 minutes. They are delicious! I yielded 32 mini cakes, which comes out to about 40 calories a mini cake. I used nonfat cottage cheese because that's what I had in my fridge. DELICIOUS!

  13. I can't wait to try this but have a problem with the sucralose in most powders - it's mouth-burningly sweet for me. I have some unflavoured that I'm using now. If I were to make this, do you have any idea how much cocoa powder and stevia I'd need to add the chocolate flavour to it?

  14. I just made this with chocolate orange whey, gram flour and 1/6c granulated stevia sweetener. Good, although I mixed it by hand so the cottage cheese and beans weren't completely blended which doesn't affect the taste it just doesnt look as pretty!
